How to Obtain Your DIMEX Card in Costa Rica: A Step-By-Step Guide

by Quatro Legal Immigration Team | June. 13, 2024 | Video, Immigration

Have you heard of a DIMEX card?

Once the immigration department approves your residency, you will have to get enrolled in Caja and then request your DIMEX card, which is your local ID card.

To request your DIMEX card, it will be required to schedule an appointment at the post office called Correos de Costa Rica. The exact address will depend on the area where you live, and we will schedule your appointment based on your availability.

What to Expect on Your DIMEX Card Appointment Day

On the day of the appointment, one of our providers will be waiting for you at the main entrance, as we never send clients alone to these appointments to guarantee a smooth process for you. We will make the introduction before the appointment so you can recognize the provider. During the appointment, our provider will be allowed to be next to you and assist during the meeting.

We will bring the required documents and you will only need to bring your passport. The officer at the post office will scan all the documents that we provide, including your valid passport, as that has to be sent to the immigration department for review. And finally, they will take your picture and get some fingerprints on an electronic machine they have, and you will need to sign digitally into another machine.

Once everything is ready, you will receive a receipt to your email address. It is important to double check your email before leaving the post office to guarantee that you received the document and to most importantly ensure that the information is right and everything is spelled correctly. The appointment could take around 20 minutes, however, that will depend on the amount of people with scheduled appointments for that day as well as the post office personnel.

What Happens After Your DIMEX Appointment?

After attending the appointment, it will take approximately one month for your DIMEX card to be ready for pickup at the post office. Keep in mind that it will not be sent to your house or any other personal location. It is possible to attend the appointment at one post office and request them to send it to another post office location.

The receipt will be required to retrieve your DIMEX card once it is ready, so please don’t lose it. We can help you track the DIMEX card so you know once it’s ready for pickup.
