If you’re planning a move to Costa Rica, rest assured that bringing your beloved dog or cat is a relatively simple process—especially compared to other countries in South America or Europe. Costa Rica does not require microchipping or quarantine, making the transition smoother for both you and your pet.

What You Need to Know

Costa Rica welcomes pets with minimal restrictions, but there are still some essential steps to follow.

Here’s what you need to do to ensure a hassle-free entry for your pet:

1. Health Certificate Requirements

• Your pet must be at least three months old to travel.
• A health certificate must be issued by a licensed veterinarian in your home country.
• The certificate should confirm that your pet is in good health and free from contagious diseases.

The health certificate must be endorsed by the APHIS Veterinary Services Area Office (if traveling from the U.S) You can find contact information for the office on the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) website by selecting “Travel with my pet.”

2. USDA Accreditation & Digital Endorsement (For U.S. Travelers)

• USDA-accredited veterinarians can issue electronic health certificates.
• The Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS) allows veterinarians to submit these certificates digitally for USDA endorsement.
• Once digitally endorsed, the certificate can be returned electronically, streamlining the process.

3. Important Considerations

The veterinarian is responsible for ensuring your pet meets all health requirements before issuing the certificate.
Any errors or missing information on the health certificate can lead to delays or complications upon arrival in Costa Rica.
