Workplace Relationships

It’s no secret that we spend a large part of our lives at work. This can lead to personal chemistry between office colleagues that goes beyond the merely professional, which is completely normal.

Should romantic relationships be a matter of concern to the company? Not always. However, they can become a relevant issue when they create a conflict of interest, that is, when the impartiality and judgment of one of the parties involved is compromised, affecting his/her ability to objectively safeguard the company’s best interests.

Establishing clear rules will allow these types of situations to be handled appropriately, guiding employees on how to proceed if they decide to enter into a romantic relationship with someone associated with the company, whether a colleague, an external professional, a supplier, or even a client.

Some key questions companies should consider:

  • What behavior is expected of employees in these situations?
  • What behaviors are inappropriate on company premises or during working hours?
  • How should business trips be handled when a co-workers in a romantic relationship should go for work?
  • What happens if the relationship involves people with a reporting relationship?

If you are reading this as an employee rather than an employer, it’s important to remember that transparency in your relationships within the workplace can avoid awkward situations, such as unfounded harassment complaints filed by third parties who perceive unusual closeness between colleagues. Maintaining respect, decorum, and courtesy toward your partner at work not only demonstrates consideration for them but also contributes to a harmonious work environment.

Excessive displays of affection can be uncomfortable in any setting, so it’s advisable to avoid them, even at festive corporate events.

Also, remember that your hiring is for a job-related need, the purpose of your hiring is not to win over your coworkers romantically speaking. Avoid engaging in multiple romantic relationships within the office or maintaining a relationship that isn’t free of commitment, as these situations can lead to conflicts, distractions, and even indiscipline during working hours, which could lead to disciplinary action, including termination, depending on the severity of the case.

Each company has its own culture and approach to personal relationships in the workplace. If you’d like advice on establishing clear policies that prevent conflicts and promote a harmonious work environment, we at Quatro Legal are here to help.
