The Costa Rican Ministry of Health, in collaboration with immigration authorities, has announced a special exemption allowing travelers vaccinated against yellow fever to enter the country, even if they have not completed the mandatory 10-day waiting period after vaccination.

This decision comes in response to the global vaccine shortage caused by high demand in countries experiencing active transmission of the disease, particularly in South America. To ease entry for travelers and address the limited vaccine availability, the Ministry of Health has coordinated with immigration officials to implement this temporary measure.

Who can benefit from this exception?

This exemption applies only to travelers coming from countries listed in Executive Decree No. 39997-S-G-SP-RE, which identifies regions at risk for yellow fever transmission.

How long will this exception be in effect

The exemption will remain in place until global vaccine availability improves and Costa Rica regains sufficient supply to fully enforce its standard entry requirements.

Key considerations for travelers

✅ Travelers must present an official vaccination certificate issued abroad.

✅ This is a temporary measure and will be subject to ongoing evaluation by the Ministry of Health.

✅ Visitors should stay informed about any updates to entry requirements before traveling.
