Security Recommendations For Travelers From Your Legal Team

by Quatro Legal Immigration Team | Jan 3, 2024 | Article, Immigration

While the majority of our visitors enjoy a safe experience, it is essential to employ practical safety measures to mitigate potential risks and deter criminal activity.

Travelers often stand out from locals, so it is important to take precautionary measures to minimize the risk of incidents. Here are some universal safety tips applicable to any travel destination:

Travel in Groups: Consider moving in groups, especially during the early morning or late at night.

Sobriety and Awareness: Refrain from substance use, excessive alcohol consumption, and remain vigilant at all times.

Solo Travel Vigilance: Solo travelers, particularly women, should exercise caution on beaches, in national parks, and other remote locations when there are few others around.

Low Profile Approach: Avoid drawing attention to yourself by refraining from displaying flashy belongings or dressing conspicuously.

Compliance during Robbery: If faced with a robbery, prioritize personal safety over possessions; hand over cash and valuables without resistance.

Bus Travel Caution: Avoid placing luggage in overhead bins on buses, as theft from these areas is increasing.

Secure Valuables: Refrain from carrying your passport or excessive amounts of money when out and about. Keep valuables securely locked in your accommodation, avoiding leaving anything of value in plain sight.

Surfing Precautions: While surfing, do not leave belongings unattended under your towel.

Guard Against Snatch-and-Grabs: Be cautious of snatch-and-grab incidents, which are common in tourist areas. Thieves may target watches, sunglasses, and other accessible items.

Vehicle Theft Prevention: Theft from parked and unattended vehicles is rising. Park in well-lit or guarded areas, keep doors locked, windows rolled up, and avoid leaving valuables visible.

Crowded Location Awareness: Pay close attention to your surroundings, particularly in crowded places and when using public transport throughout Costa Rica.

Touristy Area Caution: Tourist-heavy areas, such as beaches, national parks, and downtown San Jose, are more susceptible to theft; exercise heightened awareness in these locations.

Mosquito Protection: Protect yourself from mosquito bites, especially during dawn and dusk.
